How much is driveway cleaning in Dorking, and can you come today?
The short answer: driveway cleaning in Dorking (RH4/RH5) starts at £4 per square metre for tarmac and concrete, £5 for block paving, so most 50m² double drives land between £200 and £300, £80 minimum. Driveway cleaning means pre-treating the moss and algae, machine-washing the whole surface with a rotary surface cleaner, hand-lancing the edges, then dealing with the aftermath: weeds out, joints re-sanded with kiln dried sand on block paving, slurry cleared, everything bagged and taken away. That last bit is the difference between a proper job and a wet green mess spread across your verge, and in Dorking the green comes back quicker than most of Surrey, which is the bit worth understanding before you book.
Key facts: driveway cleaning in Dorking (RH4/RH5)
- From £4/m² for tarmac and concrete, from £5/m² for block paving, in line with our published price list. £80 minimum charge.
- Re-sanding with kiln dried sand is included on every block paving clean, never an extra.
- Dorking drives green up faster. The town sits in the Mole Gap, sheltered between the North Downs Chalk at Box Hill and the Lower Greensand ridge towards Westcott, mapped by the British Geological Survey[2]. The valley floor holds its damp, so RH4 and RH5 surfaces stay wet 3 to 5 weeks longer a year than the Wisley rainfall figure suggests[1].
- Most Dorking drives are due every 12 to 15 months, tighter than the roughly two-year rhythm we see in drier parts of Surrey, which is why a cheaper maintenance clean makes sense here.
- No hosepipe ban here: SES Water, which supplies the Dorking area, has no ban in place as of 9 July 2026. The nearest live ban is South East Water's, in Kent.
Driveway cleaning prices in Dorking (RH4/RH5)
Real ranges, no “from £19” nonsense that turns into £90 on the doorstep. The table below is built from the same rates as our pricing page and cost calculator, applied to the drive sizes we actually see around the Mole Valley, from the tight town-centre forecourts to the wide gravel-and-block drives up on Deepdene Avenue.
| Drive size | Tarmac / concrete | Block paving (re-sand included) | Typical RH4/RH5 example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single drive (20–30m²) | £80–£120 | £100–£150 | Victorian forecourts off West Street and Dene Street |
| Double drive (40–50m²) | £160–£200 | £200–£250 | 1930s semis around Bentsbrook and Chart Downs, North Holmwood |
| Large / triple (60–90m²) | £240–£360 | £300–£450 | Detached plots around Deepdene, Pixham, Westcott and Brockham |
| Maintenance clean (any size, on a regular cycle) | From £80 | From £80 | Drives already done within 12–18 months |
£80 minimum on every job. Heavy moss, oil staining or years without a clean can add up to 50% for the extra pre-treatment and time, and in the Mole Valley that neglect builds faster than most places. On the biggest drives the m² rate eases, ask when we quote. Want it pinned down now? Try the cost calculator or send a photo.

Why Dorking drives green up faster, and what a maintenance clean costs
This is the honest bit most cleaners won’t tell you. Dorking sits at the bottom of the Mole Gap, the cut the river made through the North Downs, sheltered by Box Hill and the chalk to the north and the Greensand ridge towards Westcott and Leith Hill to the south[2]. That shelter is lovely to live in and terrible for driveways: it slows the wind, traps cold damp air on the valley floor overnight, and the Surrey Hills tree canopy keeps direct sun off the surface. The Met Office rain figure at Wisley is the same as the rest of east Surrey[1], but your drive stays wet for weeks longer each year, and damp is exactly what algae, black spot and moss feed on.
The practical result: an RH4 or RH5 drive that greens over in the shaded band by the pavement within a year, where the same drive up on drier ground might go two. So rather than sell you a full deep clean every time, we’ll often suggest a lighter maintenance clean once your drive is on a regular cycle. There’s far less moss to pre-treat and less time on the machine, so a single maintenance drive can start at the £80 minimum and a double often lands around £120 to £160, well under the cost of letting it go feral and paying for the heavy job again. We’ll tell you honestly which one your drive needs when we look, and there’s more on timing in how often to clean a driveway.
Block paving, tarmac, concrete and resin drives in Dorking
What the microclimate means for each surface across RH4 and RH5:
- Block paving on the estates. The interwar and post-war streets around North Holmwood, Bentsbrook and Chart Downs, and the newer closes off Westcott Road, are mostly block paving. The joints are the weak point: sand washes out, moss and weeds move in, and here the Mole Valley damp refills those joints faster than anywhere else on our patch. We wash, kill the weeds and re-sand with kiln dried sand as standard. More on the surface itself on our block paving cleaning page, and on the weeds in weeds in block paving.
- Concrete and tarmac in the town centre. The Georgian and Victorian terraces off West Street, Dene Street and the High Street mostly have small concrete or tarmac forecourts. Quick jobs, usually at or near the £80 minimum, and the difference between grey-green and its original colour is startling.
- Resin-bound drives. A fair few of the newer Dorking and Pixham builds have resin. It cleans up well but hates high pressure up close, the binder can scar, so we run lower pressure and more chemistry. We price these on a photo or a quick look first.
- Sloped drives off the hills. Dorking is anything but flat. Drives running down off Box Hill, Ranmore and the Deepdene slopes drain fast at the top and hold water at the bottom, so the moss concentrates in a band near the road. Normal here, and it comes off the same.
What’s included in a Dorking driveway clean
- Walk the drive first. Surface, condition, drainage, oil stains, anything loose or cracked. If a repair is what you actually need, we say so rather than wash over the problem.
- Pre-treat. Moss and algae get a sodium hypochlorite treatment before the water goes anywhere near it. The dilution and dwell time do the work, not brute pressure, and on a shaded Mole Valley drive that pre-treat earns its keep. More in our algae removal guide.
- Machine wash. Rotary surface cleaner across the field of the drive for an even, stripe-free finish, then the lance for edges, corners and the awkward bits by the garage door.
- Weeds and joints. Weeds cleared from the joints, and on block paving we re-sand with kiln dried sand once the surface has dried off. Included, always.
- Tidy up. Slurry and debris bagged and taken away, paths and gullies rinsed down. We leave the drive clean and the rest of the frontage no worse than we found it.
Optional extras, priced honestly: oil stain treatment (some stains never fully lift from concrete, we’ll tell you before we start) and sealing after the clean. Plenty of Surrey drives don’t need sealing at all, so we’ll only quote it where it earns its keep.
Streets and neighbourhoods we cover
All of RH4 and RH5 is on our regular run: central Dorking, Westcott, Brockham, North Holmwood, South Holmwood, Mickleham and Betchworth, from the conservation-area terraces off West Street to the estates around Bentsbrook and Chart Downs and the bigger detached drives up around Deepdene, Pixham and Box Hill. Next door we cover Reigate (RH2), Betchworth (RH3), Leatherhead (KT22) and the rest of Surrey within 20 miles. See everything we clean in Dorking, and while we’re at your place it’s worth bundling: a patio clean on the same visit is cheaper than two callouts.
Why driveway quotes vary
Two Dorking drives the same size can be £100 apart, and the reasons are boring but real: surface type, condition, access, and whether re-sanding or sealing is in scope. In the Mole Valley, condition is the big one, a drive left three years greens up far worse here than the same drive in a drier town, so it takes longer and costs more. Anyone quoting a flat “any driveway £60” is cutting a corner, the maths doesn’t work otherwise, and we’ve set out the full cost build-up in our UK driveway cleaning cost guide.
