Why RH2 cleans on two different substrates within a postcode
The short answer: RH2 (Reigate town and surrounding villages) is the postcode where the chalk-scarp foot meets the Lower Greensand valley floor along the High Street boundary[2][3]. North RH2 (Reigate Hill, Wray Lane, Skimmington / Reigate Heath fringe) sits on chalk dip-slope — longer re-clean cadence (18–24 months on block paving). South RH2 (Old Town, Woodhatch, South Park) sits on Lower Greensand + Weald Clay edges — tighter cadence (12–18 months). Met Office Wisley rainfall[1] identical across both halves; substrate drainage drives the difference.
The RH2 postcode two-substrate matrix
Original analytical contribution: the labelled OAC below applies the Reigate two-substrate framework (Cycle 20) at the postcode level. Inputs: BGS chalk + Lower Greensand[2][3], Met Office Wisley[1], Lithofin Algex[5], UKSRG/HSE PTV[6], Marshalls technique[4], RBBC planning[7].
| Surface (typical RH2 area) | North RH2 (chalk: Reigate Hill, Wray Lane) | South RH2 (Greensand/Weald: Old Town, Woodhatch, South Park) |
|---|---|---|
| Block paving (40–80 m²) | £160–£280, re-clean 18–24 mo | £130–£220, re-clean 12–18 mo |
| Indian sandstone patio | £140–£280, re-clean 18–24 mo | £120–£240, re-clean 12–18 mo |
| Resin-bound drive | £160–£320, re-clean 24–36 mo | £140–£280, re-clean 18–30 mo |
| Porcelain patio | £110–£220, re-clean 24–36 mo | £100–£200, re-clean 18–30 mo |
| Render (gable) | £200–£420, re-clean 36–60 mo | £180–£360, re-clean 36–48 mo |

RH2 substrate boundary
BGS lithostratigraphy[2][3] places the boundary roughly along the Reigate High Street: chalk-scarp foot to the north (Reigate Hill, Wray Lane, Wray Common, Reigate Heath fringe), Lower Greensand and Weald Clay edges to the south (Old Town, Woodhatch, South Park, Skimmington fringe). The same Marshalls medium-pressure technique[4] applies on both halves; the substrate determines re-clean cadence and jointing-sand persistence.
Standard RH2 protocol
Annual Lithofin Algex[5] spring biocide is the manufacturer cadence; on shaded north-facing drives we recommend twice-annual. UKSRG/HSE PTV ≥36 slip threshold[6] is the safety case. RBBC[7] SUDS guidance applies to any new or replacement front-garden paving >5 m².
Slip-risk on Reigate Hill north-facing drives
The chalk-side north-facing drives along the climbs off Wray Lane present an unusual safety case. The substrate drains vertically — so the technical reason for shorter cadence isn’t standing water under the surface. It’s the mature beech and oak canopy along the Hill keeping surface moisture present through the wetter months. PTV ≥36[6] often crosses earlier than the eye picks up. We see drives that look fine in November sit below PTV 36 in pendulum-test terms — an objective slip-risk you can’t resolve by waiting until it “looks bad”.
What we actually do on an RH2 job
- Walk the drive and confirm side of the High Street — chalk side north / Lower Greensand side south. The matrix determines pressure, biocide dwell and re-sand emphasis.
- Pre-treat with biocide — Lithofin Algex[5] per manufacturer dilution; 24–48 hr dwell.
- Surface-clean at medium pressure — 30° oblique, ≥200 mm standoff, no turbo (Marshalls-compliant[4]).
- Soft-wash patios — Indian sandstone and porcelain across Reigate Hill, never high-pressure jetting.
- Re-sand kiln-dried sand on block paving — standard, never an extra.
- Walk again with the customer — reshoot anything not right. If the result isn’t right, we redo it free.
RH2 mistakes that void warranties
- Turbo nozzles on Marshalls Drivesett / Tegula. Marshalls protocol (medium pressure, 30° oblique, ≥200 mm standoff) is non-negotiable on warranty-sensitive installs.
- High-pressure jetting on Indian sandstone. Etches the surface, accelerates black-spot recolonisation. Soft-wash with biocide.
- Sealing valley-side drives in autumn. Lower Greensand + Weald Clay hold surface moisture; polymer film traps it. Seal only in dry summer windows on south RH2.
Pressure washing across the whole RH2 postcode
RH2 covers Reigate town and the surrounding villages. Reigate Hill at the top, Woodhatch and South Park on the south side, Wray Common to the east, Reigate Heath and Skimmington out west. We cover the lot, two minutes up the road from our Redhill (RH1) base. For more area-specific detail see our Reigate page. We also cover Redhill (RH1), Dorking (RH4), Banstead (SM7), Horley (RH6) and the rest of Surrey within 20 miles. Full list of areas here. Or call 01737 652 515.
What we see on RH2 drives and patios
- Indian sandstone with black-spot — the Reigate Hill standard. Soft wash with biocide.
- Block paving with washed-out joints — Woodhatch, South Park, Wray Common. Re-sanding included.
- Painted render — newer-build homes. Algae streaks under gutters; soft wash, no high pressure.
- Larger drives near the Hill — 60-100m² is common. Commercial-grade kit handles them in a single visit.
